The Upsilon Sun Rises Again

Published July 26, 2023

The Upsilon Sun, the official publication of the Upsilon Sigma Phi Alumni Association, which was first published as a newsletter and bulletin in 1985, is now back in circulation as an on-line and web-based newspaper. The publication officially relaunched on August 21, 2023, under the direction and leadership of the current Board of Trustees of the USPAA and its IT and Communications team.

The "Sun" vows to continue with its original pledge "to provide a vehicle for the dissemination of the intellectual resources of the fraternity” as stated in in its original statement of policy which was published in 1985. A trademark application was successfully filed in July with the help of brod Ken Sarmiento '82, chairman of the alumni association's legal committee.

The Upsilon Sun has long been a successful publication that helped provide news about the alumni organization, its members and the fraternity in general. The inaugural issue was published in April of 1985 with an editorial staff headed by Carlo Magno ’58 and composed of Nes Jacinto ’66, Jes Sundiam ’75 and Celso Ani ‘79. Many prominent members of the alumni joined its editorial board as editors, writers, contributors, and editorial consultants, these include Mario Camacho ’51 (+), Tony Cantero ’51, Ed Espiritu ’55, Natz Vergara '58 (+), Tristan Catindig ‘63 and Chito Avecilla ’79.

The Upsilon Sun was a newsletter and bulletin first published in 1985 by the USPAA and was the primary source of information about the fraternity prior to the internet age.

This new on-line version of the "Sun" aims to deliver news and information about the fraternity and its members not just to the fellowship but to a bigger and wider audience and will further enhance the fraternity's ability to convey news about the Upsilon and Upsilonians to the outside world.

" It is with great excitement that the Upsilon Sigma Phi Alumni Association (USPAA) welcomes the return of The Upsilon Sun under the steadfast leadership of USPAA Trustee Ricky Rionda ‘83 and his editorial team," said USPAA President Yari Miralao '88.

"With more than 1,500 Upsilonians scattered across multiple generations, geographies, professions, and interest groups, it is vital that we create common platforms from where our fellowship can disseminate information, exchange ideas, and mobilize towards common initiatives for the benefit of our beloved fraternity. The Upsilon Sun is one of these platforms that the USPAA is proud to support. We hope you enjoy the articles and encourage your feedback and contributions," he added.

The publication is actively recruiting volunteers to assist with the various sections as editors, writers, contributors and staff; please email us at contact.upsilonsun@gmail.com if you wish to join the Sun team.
