Upsilon Sigma Phi: A Legacy of Progress and Values
By Edwin O. Paña '69
Credo is a Latin word that means “I believe” or “I trust.” It is also a term used to describe a statement of principles or beliefs that guide one’s actions or decisions. In this article, we will explore the Credo of the Upsilon Sigma Phi, the oldest Greek-letter fraternity in Asia and the Philippines. Founded in 1918 at the University of the Philippines, the Upsilon Sigma Phi has a rich history of producing leaders and achievers in various fields of endeavor. The Upsilon Credo, written by one of its founding members, expresses the fraternity’s values and aspirations, such as fellowship, loyalty, service, and peace.
We will examine the meaning and significance of each line of the Credo, and how it reflects the Upsilonian spirit and identity.
Upsilon Credo: It is a statement of the beliefs and values of the Upsilon Sigma Phi, a fraternity in the University of the Philippines.
Fellowship: The Credo expresses the appreciation for the sincere fellowship of the fraternity brothers, who consider each other as upright and self-respecting men.
Service: The Credo highlights the commitment to growth and greater service to fellowmen, the university, the country, and the world, through creating a climate conducive to learning and progress and supporting the ideals of peace and freedom.
Tradition: The Credo reveres the fine traditions of the fraternity, such as its abiding faith and loyalty to the alma mater and country, its spirit of self-negation for the greater good, and its oneness in victory and defeat.
The Upsilon Sigma Phi, a fraternity deeply rooted in the University of the Philippines, has a rich history spanning over a century. Its principles are influenced by the tenets of Freemasonry, emphasizing ideals such as peace, freedom, mutual aid, and self-negation for the greater good.
As we peer into the horizon of the future, we find that these very principles remain relevant and essential.
1. Fellowship and Unity
In a world that grows increasingly interconnected, the concept of fellowship takes on new dimensions. The Upsilon credo celebrates sincere fellowship among its members, recognizing each other as upright and self-respecting individuals. In the future, this spirit of unity will be crucial. As global challenges—climate change, pandemics, and social inequities—loom large, collaborative efforts will be our greatest strength. Just as fraternity brothers stand together, humanity must unite to address shared problems.
2. Service and Global Responsibility
The Upsilon credo speaks of commitment to growth and greater service. In the future, services will extend beyond national borders. Our responsibility will encompass not only our fellow citizens but also the entire planet. As technology advances, we will face ethical dilemmas, environmental crises, and the need for equitable access to resources. The Upsilon spirit of service reminds us to work tirelessly for the betterment of all, regardless of geographical boundaries.
3. Tradition and Adaptation
Tradition is the bedrock upon which the Upsilon fraternity stands. Yet, traditions evolve. In the future, we will grapple with the tension between preserving heritage and embracing change. Just as Upsilonians honor their fine traditions, humanity must cherish its cultural legacies while adapting to new realities. We will celebrate our heroes, learn from their wisdom, and forge paths that lead to progress.
4. Striving for Leadership
The Upsilon fraternity strives for leadership. In the future, leadership will not be confined to political offices or corporate boardrooms. It will emerge from diverse backgrounds—artists, scientists, activists, and entrepreneurs. Leadership will mean advocating for justice, championing inclusivity, and inspiring others. The Upsilon model of leadership—rooted in service and integrity—will guide us toward a more just and compassionate world.
5. The Quest for Light
The Upsilon credo seeks the light. In the future, this quest will continue. We will seek knowledge, understanding, and enlightenment. But the light we pursue will not be limited to individual enlightenment; it will illuminate collective paths. As we navigate complex issues—AI ethics, genetic engineering, and space exploration—we will rely on the beacon of reason, compassion, and shared values.
Conclusion: Upsilon’s Enduring Legacy
The Upsilon Sigma Phi’s centennial celebration coincides with a pivotal moment in history. It grapples with its past associations and seeks to redefine its image. Just as Upsilonians strive for renewal, so must humanity. We stand at the crossroads, where our choices today shape the world of tomorrow. Let us draw inspiration from the Upsilon credo—a beacon of fellowship, service, tradition, leadership, and light—as we march toward a future that awaits our stewardship.
“Let us reaffirm a culture of respect, tolerance, and decency within Upsilon and our entire fraternity system,” echoes UP President Danilo Concepcion.
May this sentiment echo across the globe, guiding us toward a brighter, more harmonious future.
