Upsilon Sigma Phi Alumni Association Honors Excellence with the Upsilonian Noble & Outstanding (UNO) Awards
Since its founding in 1918, Upsilon Sigma Phi has stood as a beacon of excellence, brotherhood, and leadership in the Philippines and beyond. As Asia’s oldest Greek-letter organization, it has nurtured generations of leaders who have shaped the nation’s history, steered its industries, and uplifted communities through their dedication to service and innovation.
This year, the Upsilon Sigma Phi Alumni Association will host the Upsilonian Noble and Outstanding (UNO) Awards on February 8, 2025, at Ang Bahay ng Alumni, University of the Philippines. This prestigious event, which will be held in conjunction with the fraternity’s 20th Biennial Congress, will honor exceptional members whose lives and legacies reflect the fraternity’s timeless values of Brotherhood, Integrity, Excellence, Leadership, and Service.
Each awardee’s story is a testament to the transformative power of the Upsilon Sigma Phi’s ideals. Their achievements span governance, education, the arts, environmental advocacy, business, and public service, showcasing the fraternity’s enduring influence across generations.
UNO Awardees
Fellow Ferdinand E. Marcos ’37
Ferdinand E. Marcos joined Upsilon Sigma Phi in 1937 and rose to prominence as one of the nation’s most impactful leaders. A graduate of the UP College of Law, cum laude, and topnotcher of the 1939 Bar Exams, his academic and legal prowess foreshadowed a career defined by visionary leadership.
During his presidency, fellow Marcos exemplified fraternity ideals by appointing capable Upsilon brothers to key roles in government, fostering unity in leadership. Notable among these were Enrique Fausto M. Fernando Sr. and Alfonso A. Calalang, who contributed to his vision of a “New Society.” Behind the scenes, fraternity brother Francisco O. Tansengco played a pivotal role in his 1965 campaign, exemplifying the camaraderie and loyalty that defined Marcos' journey.
Fellow Marcos remains a controversial and polarizing figure in Philippine politics. His declaration of Martial Law in 1972 and closure of the Philippine Congress marked a significant shift towards authoritarian rule. Yet, many Filipinos laud him for instituting political and economic reforms that contributed to stability and progress in the Philippines. He is a giant in Philippine history and his impact as a leader and politician left an indelible mark in society that is felt to this day.
Fellow Jorge A. Gonzales ’39
Jorge Gonzales embodied resilience and leadership during some of the most challenging periods in Philippine history. As an active member of Upsilon Sigma Phi during World War II, Gonzales nurtured fraternity unity and strength. He was instrumental in recruiting members who shared Upsilon’s ideals, ensuring its survival and growth during turbulent times.
In his post-war efforts, Gonzales revitalized the fraternity and inspired younger generations to uphold the fraternity's values. His career as Associate Editor of the Philippine Collegian showcased his dedication to ethical journalism, while his work in affordable housing initiatives reflected his commitment to improving the lives of others. His mentorship and advocacy left a lasting imprint on the fraternity and the nation.
Fellow Romy S.A. Carlos ’63
Romy Carlos '63 is celebrated as both a distinguished artist and a devoted Upsilonian. Through his art, Carlos has preserved and celebrated Filipino culture, capturing the richness of the nation’s history and identity. His exhibitions and commissioned works are a testament to his passion and integrity, elevating Filipino artistry to new heights.
Beyond the arts, Carlos’ leadership extended to the UP Alumni Association and the UP College Fine Arts Alumni Association, where he championed collaboration and community restoration projects. His efforts strengthened the bonds of the Upsilon Brotherhood, inspiring generations to embrace creativity and service.
Fellow Ernesto De Castro ’64
Dr. Ernesto S. de Castro is a towering figure in civil and structural engineering. As the founder of ESCA, he transformed it into a globally competitive firm by introducing innovative approaches like Building Information Modeling (BIM) in the Philippines. His visionary leadership and commitment to ethical practices revolutionized the construction industry.
Dr. de Castro’s impact extends to his leadership in professional organizations, where he served as President of the Association of Structural Engineers of the Philippines (ASEP) and the Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers (PICE). As a mentor, educator, and former Dean of Engineering at the University of the East, Caloocan, he shaped future generations of engineers. His academic and industry contributions exemplify his dedication to advancing his profession while embodying Upsilonian values.
Fellow Steven “Bing” Mascardo Yuvienco ’67
Steven “Bing” Mascardo Yuvienco has dedicated his life to fostering fraternity unity and uplifting communities. As founding Chairman and later President of Upsilon Sigma Phi North America (USPNA), he resolved a decade-long division between Southern California's alumni chapters and helped create a unified and vibrant USP Southwest Chapter.
A leader within and beyond the fraternity, fellow Bing spearheaded initiatives such as the UP-Madrigal Singers’ Los Angeles concerts, generating scholarship funds for financially struggling alumni and fraternity members. Professionally, he excelled as Senior International Operations Manager at Dermalogica Inc., playing a pivotal role in its transformation into a Fortune 300 company.
Known for his integrity and generosity, fellow Bing’s philanthropy extends to local welfare projects, the Upsilon Medical Assistance Program, and many fraternity projects and activities. His ability to unite and inspire those around him exemplifies the ideals of Brotherhood, Integrity, Excellence, Leadership, and Service.
Fellow Renato “Abong” Tayag, Jr. ’67
Renato “Abong” Tayag Jr. has championed environmental sustainability and community empowerment through decades of dedicated service. As President of the Abacan River and Angeles Watershed Advocacy Council, Inc. (ARAW-ACI), he spearheaded reforestation projects and renewable energy initiatives in Pampanga, addressing critical environmental challenges. Programs like the “Adopt-a-Watershed Program” and “Subli” have mobilized private companies, local governments, and Indigenous communities to reforest thousands of hectares and raise awareness about water security and climate action.
Fellow Abong’s advocacy extends to economic empowerment through his butchers’ training program, which has enabled hundreds of Filipino workers to secure opportunities abroad. His integrity, fairness, and inclusive leadership have earned him respect across diverse sectors, making him a true Upsilonian whose impact embodies Brotherhood, Integrity, Excellence, Leadership, and Service.
Fellow Jesus Crispin “Boying” Remulla ’79
Jesus Crispin “Boying” Remulla exemplifies the ideals of the Upsilon Sigma Phi through his fearless dedication to justice, good governance, and public service. As Secretary of Justice, fellow Boying spearheaded reforms that have restored faith in the rule of law, earning him recognition as “Asia’s Outstanding Leader in Public Service.” His commitment to integrity and fairness mirrors Upsilon’s legacy of producing visionary leaders in governance and justice.
Throughout his career, fellow Boying has fostered unity and collaboration, transcending political divides to prioritize the greater good. Whether supporting fraternity brothers during the pandemic or addressing national challenges, his leadership is defined by bold action and unwavering principles. Fellow Boying’s contributions stand as a testament to the fraternity’s core values of Brotherhood, Integrity, Excellence, Leadership, and Service.
Fellow Robert Lester Aranton ’81
Robert Lester “Bob” Aranton embodies the Upsilonian spirit through decades of leadership and service. As a former President of the Upsilon Sigma Phi Davao Alumni Chapter, he helped organize landmark events like the first Upsilon Summit and the biennial “Bangkaw sa Davao,” which continue to unite and inspire fraternity members in Mindanao. His outreach efforts have reconnected brothers across remote regions, fostering a deep sense of fraternity camaraderie.
Professionally, Fellow Bob leads multiple companies in logistics, warehousing, and real estate, where his leadership and excellence have set industry standards. As an Alumni Regent at the UP Board of Regents, he represents Upsilon with distinction in the university’s highest policymaking body. His tenure as PEZA Board Member representing the Investors/Private Sector highlights his dedication to advancing industries that support economic growth and community welfare, with initiatives that directly benefit workers and their families.
As the current President of the UP Alumni Association, his flagship “4Es CONNECT” program bridges the gap between education and employment, creating meaningful opportunities for students and alumni alike.
Through his visionary leadership and tireless service, Fellow Bob exemplifies Brotherhood, Integrity, Excellence, Leadership, and Service, leaving a profound and lasting impact on the fraternity and the nation.
Fellow Romeo Thaddeus Racelis Liamzon Jr. ‘81
Romeo Thaddeus “Thad” Liamzon Jr. exemplifies Upsilon Sigma Phi’s ideals through decades of leadership and service. As the Centennial President of the USPAA, fellow Thad secured the recognition of Upsilon Sigma Phi as the first fraternity in the Philippines and Asia, culminating in the installation of the Upsilon Historical Marker at UP Diliman.
A visionary in real estate development, fellow Thad led groundbreaking projects such as the Pag-Ibig City and guided the Liamzon Group of Companies to success in affordable housing and commercial ventures. His philanthropic initiatives, including the “Through the Eyes of the Child” project and the Upsilon Project Smile, have transformed lives and strengthened communities.
Fellow Thad’s work in education and conflict-affected areas, particularly in Mindanao, underscores his belief in education as a tool for peace and progress. His collaboration with government and non-profit organizations reflects his tireless dedication to Upsilon Sigma Phi’s imperatives.
Fellow Fernando “Dindo” C. Sanchez Jr. ‘84
Dr. Fernando “Dindo” Sanchez Jr., former Chancellor of UPLB and a pioneer in landscape horticulture, has redefined the standards of academic leadership and sustainable development. The first Filipino to earn a PhD in Landscape Horticulture, fellow Dindo’s designs have shaped notable projects such as the UP Mindanao Campus Master Plan and the Dr. Jose Rizal Centennial Marker in Tokyo, Japan.
During his tenure as UPLB Chancellor, he secured over Php 4.3 billion for groundbreaking research projects and Php 4.8 billion for infrastructure development, modernizing UPLB to meet the challenges of the 21st century. Through UPLB 4.0, he championed interdisciplinary research and climate-responsive solutions in food, water, and energy, aligning the university’s vision with global sustainability goals.
A true innovator and dedicated educator, Dindo’s leadership continues to inspire progress, embodying Upsilon Sigma Phi’s core values of Brotherhood, Integrity, Excellence, Leadership, and Service.
Fellow Ferdinand Martin Romualdez ’85
Ferdinand Martin Gomez Romualdez is a visionary leader whose career in public service and business exemplifies Upsilon Sigma Phi’s ideals of Brotherhood, Integrity, Excellence, Leadership, and Service. As the current Speaker of the House of Representatives, fellow Martin has redefined legislative leadership by steering the House to achieve record-breaking milestones. Under his stewardship, the 19th Congress filed over 13,454 measures, passed 1,368 bills, and enacted 166 into Republic Acts, reflecting an unprecedented level of productivity and governance.
Fellow Martin’s unwavering dedication to inclusive development is evident in his authorship of House Bill No. 1039, which became Republic Act 10754, expanding benefits for persons with disabilities. This landmark legislation underscores his commitment to improving the lives of Filipinos, especially the underserved and marginalized.
Beyond politics, fellow Martin has excelled in the corporate world, holding executive positions in leading financial institutions such as Equitable PCI Bank and the Philippine Commercial International Bank. His acumen in law and business has allowed him to address complex national challenges with a strategic and results-oriented mindset.
Fellow Martin’s leadership transcends government and politics. He has consistently advocated for unity and resilience, calling on Filipinos to come together to build a stronger and more progressive nation. His collaborative approach and vision for inclusive progress have earned him recognition as one of the country’s most trusted and respected leaders.
As a distinguished Upsilonian, fellow Martin embodies the fraternity’s highest ideals through his exemplary service to the nation. His achievements in governance and business make him a fitting honoree at the 2025 UNO Awards, inspiring both his peers and the next generation of leaders.
Fellow Alan Gerard Dimacuha Austriaco ‘86
Alan Gerard Dimacuha Austriaco is a respected ophthalmologist and leader whose work has restored vision and brought hope to countless individuals. As the head of the Upsilon Medical Assistance Program’s (UMAP) Medical Triage Team, Alan has led a team of 17 Upsilonian doctors, assisting over 700 fraternity members with their medical needs. His leadership ensures timely referrals, financial advisory support, and compassionate care for Upsilonians and their families. Alan’s unwavering commitment to service extends beyond the fraternity through his participation in numerous medical missions across the country, offering critical eye care in underserved areas.
Alan’s integrity and leadership also shine in his roles as Batch Leader of Batch 1986 since 2010 and as a consistent presence at fraternity fellowships. Known for his ability to inspire and unify, he has contributed significantly to maintaining Upsilon Sigma Phi’s enduring legacy of excellence and service.
Fellow Cary Landingin Calimlim ‘93
A veterinarian and entrepreneur, Fellow Cary Landingin Calimlim ‘93 has demonstrated a steadfast commitment to leadership and service. Founder of Vetremedica Corporation, his business success is grounded in ethical principles. Cary’s leadership extends to the fraternity, where he serves as Chairman of the Upsilon Sigma Phi Los Baños Alumni Association (USPLBAA). His initiatives have bridged generational gaps within the fraternity through mentorship programs, alumni networking events, and the revival of the Ortigas Fellowship. Known for his integrity and fairness, Cary is a firm believer in leading by example, often saying, “It is better to lose a friend than lose your sense of integrity.”
Beyond his professional and fraternity roles, fellow Cary actively participates in community engagements such as medical missions, gift-giving programs, and environmental conservation initiatives, including advocating for Philippine eagles through the Philippine Eagle Foundation. Through his commitment to Brotherhood, Integrity, Excellence, Leadership, and Service, fellow Cary continues to inspire others to embrace the fraternity's values in all aspects of life.
