Fraternity Hosts Screening of Gabby Malvar's Documentary on National Artist Kidlat Tahimik

The Upsilon Sigma Phi hosted the premier screening of Indio-Genius: 500 Taon ng Labanang Kultural at the National Museum of Anthropology on November 30, 2023; this was the first-ever viewing of the Know your North, a documentary by filmmaker ๐—š๐—ฎ๐—ฏ๐—ฏ๐˜† ๐— ๐—ฎ๐—น๐˜ƒ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ about the revolutionary exhibit of National Artist ๐—ž๐—ถ๐—ฑ๐—น๐—ฎ๐˜ ๐—ง๐—ฎ๐—ต๐—ถ๐—บ๐—ถ๐—ธ. The exhibit is centered on Enrique de Malaca, a Filipino who is possibly the first person to circumnavigate the globe. Alongside this, it also touches on the exhibit's predecessor at the Palacio de Cristal in Madrid, Spain earlier in the year, previously titled as "Magellan, Marilyn, Mickey, and Fray Damaso: 500 Years of RockStar Conquistadors."

Recognized as the "Father of Philippine Indie Cinema," de Guia has received various awards including the Gawad Plaridel (2008) conferred by the University of the Philippines to outstanding media practitioners; the Fukuoka Prize (2012) for Arts and Culture which recognizes individuals who made contributions to the academia, arts and culture; the Prince Claus Laureate Award (2018) which honors outstanding achievements in the field of culture and development; and the esteemed Order of National Artist for Film and Broadcast Arts (2018).

As one of his most recent achievements, ๐—ž๐—ถ๐—ฑ๐—น๐—ฎ๐˜ ๐—ง๐—ฎ๐—ต๐—ถ๐—บ๐—ถ๐—ธ won the Esquire's Artist of the Year this 2023. It recognized him as one of the most exemplary Filipinos who actively promotes societal transformation by setting new standards for our fellow countrymen in their various fields. Hisย National Geographic series Islands Insider (2012)ย is a travel guide with a bent towards history and culture.ย On the Brink (2016), a full-length feature, offers a balanced look at Oslob's whale shark tourism.ย Passages, a series of films on Mindanao featuresย Tawi-Tawi (2015)ย andย Sulu (2020)ย through a photographer's lens.ย Know Your North (2016 to present), an anthology on Northern Luzon, exposes the region through individuals' stories.ย Fields of Hope (2014)ย juxtaposes Tacloban's recovery with the hopes of a junior football team.ย Palawan: the Last Bastion (2019)ย andย Coral Resiliency: the Marine Protected Areas of Taytay (2019)ย highlight the fragile state of the country's most popular island in the face of the demands on its resources by a growing population and the influx of tourists.ย Viajero Chroniclesย is a written collection of his journeys whileย Project Larawanย consolidates images of the diverse souls he continuously encounters.
