The Zootaxa, a renowned peer-reviewed journal specializing in the taxonomy and systematics of animals, is a critical platform for advancing knowledge in the field of zoology. Fellow Elโs paper, introduces Haematoloecha merklโi, a newly discovered species of assassin bug named after Dr. Ottรณ Merkl. The study not only sheds light on the biodiversity of Haematoloecha but also emphasizes the importance of Dr. Merklโs contributions to entomology through his collection of the speciesโ type series.
El Santillan participated in a six-month exchange program at National Chung Hsing University (NHCU) in Taichung City, Taiwan, during the 2024 Spring Semester. Enrolled in the BS Entomology Program at the University of the Philippines Los Baรฑos, he took a range of courses, from Insect Ecology to Shotgun Sequencing and Structural Systems Biology. Under the mentorship of Dr. David Rรฉdei, El gained hands-on experience through internships at NHCUโs various laboratories and insect collections. This opportunity, supported by the UP and UPLB Offices of International Linkages, helped him expand his research and practical knowledge in entomology.
Prior to his time in Taiwan, El contributed to the UPLB Museum of Natural History Mycological Herbarium as a Museum Volunteer. He also held leadership positions, serving as Former Councilor and Community Rights and Welfare (CRAW) Head, as well as Freshman Representative & Studentsโ Rights and Welfare Head in the UPLB College of Arts and Sciences Student Council.
